Infant & Young Child Feeding in Emergencies
Disasters of any size disrupt lives and impact infant feeding. Because of unique nutritional needs, immature immune systems, and dependence on caregivers infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition, illness, and even death in the event of a disaster. While internationally infant and young child feeding in emergencies is recognized as a critical issue for survival, in the United States only about a quarter of state emergency operations plans contain any mention of infant feeding and none offer guidance for breastfeeding support, safe formula preparation and care, and feeding supply donation management.
COBA has developed materials and education to support safe infant feeding in emergencies. This page contains videos, handouts for providers and families, and education outlines and materials for those who work with new families.
Videos
The following videos contain helpful information for supporting infant feeding and health during an emergency. They include COBA’s video that covers an overall response and measures to support infant feeding and care. Cup feeding is one of the safer ways to feed infants when safe water for cleaning feeding supplies is not available. Hand expression of breast milk is an extremely useful skill when a mother may be separated from her child or when she may be unable to use her breast pump due to lack of electricity, Keeping baby close to mom can help calm both mother and baby, help her milk supply and keep baby warm. Knowing how to hold a baby in a baby carrier is critical for their safety.
